Francis Walker (born July 31, 1809 in Southgate , London , † October 5, 1874 in Wanstead ) was a British entomologist .

Life

Walker came from a wealthy family and grew up in Switzerland, where he became enthusiastic about collecting butterflies at an early age. From 1837 to 1863 he collected insects for the British Museum (later the Natural History Museum ) and cataloged their collections (except for beetles). He published over 300 scientific papers and numerous first descriptions of him are still valid today, but also many double names, which later made him controversial. Much of its type material is still preserved, for example in the Natural History Museum. He lived at the Amos Grove family home.

Besides Great Britain and Ireland, he collected in France, Italy, Germany and Lapland.
