Rhynocoris erythropus , also known as the "Mediterranean murder bug", is a brown-orange-colored type of bug from the family of predatory bugs (Reduviidae).
Distribution and habitats
The distribution area of the bug species is in the western Mediterranean and extends from North Africa over the Iberian Peninsula and Italy to Western Europe (Belgium). The heat-loving species can be found sporadically in western Germany - for example in the Upper Rhine Rift , on the Middle Rhine or in the Moselle valley . Both the adult animals and the nymphs are mainly found in the herb layer .
features
The bugs of the species Rhynocoris erythropus reach body lengths between 12 and 16 millimeters. They are big and strong and mainly colored brown-orange. The head and antennae are dark brown to black in color. The strong trunk (rostrum) is colored red and black. The black label ( scutellum ) has a distinctive white central line drawing. The brown-orange pronotum has a white border to the left and right of the label. The corium and the cuneus of the forewings ( Hemielytren ) are brown-orange. The legs have an orange-brown-black pattern. The connexive (part of the abdomen visible on the side) is black with white spots.
Way of life
The animals feed exclusively on various insects in a predatory manner. The prey is quickly killed and sucked out by a sting that is also painful for humans. The adults can be seen from April to September.
