View of the Moselle valley

The Moselle valley is a natural spatial main unit group in the Rhenish Slate Mountains and thus also the low mountain range threshold . It lies entirely in Rhineland-Palatinate and contains the valley of the Moselle in Germany from the mouth of the Saar in Konz ( district of Trier-Saarburg ) to Müden ( district of Cochem-Zell ). Furthermore, the Wittlich depression on the left of the Moselle as well as the valley of the Saar from Serrig (again Trier-Saarburg) to the confluence with the Moselle are included.

The mouth of the Moselle , which is already in the Middle Rhine region, below Müdens to the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz , is not counted as part of the natural area . Accordingly, the Mayen-Koblenz district only has minimal marginal shares.

Location relative to other main unit groups

The Moselle valley stretches from the western border of Germany to the northeast, where it meets the Middle Rhine region , which runs approximately perpendicular to it , beyond which it is extended by the Gießen-Koblenzer Lahn valley . Gutland and Eastern Eifel lie to the left, i.e. northwest of the Moselle valley, and the Hunsrück to the right, and thus southeast .

Natural structure

The Moselle valley is structured as follows:

Counties and cities

Down the river Saar and then the Moselle, the natural area passes the following boundaries (only the more important cities for the locations):
