geography
The boundaries of the Heuvelland are not clearly defined. In a narrower sense, it is the region east of the A2 motorway, south of the A79 and southwest of the A76. Usually, however, Heuvelland refers to the rural part of the Limburg province south of Sittard .
The Heuvelland is formed by the foothills of the Eifel in the east and the Ardennes in the south. The highest mountain and at the same time the highest point in the European part of the Netherlands is the Vaalserberg . In the Heuvelland there are also the famous Cauberg in Valkenburg aan de Geul , the Sint Pietersberg and two artificial hills 239.3 m above sea level. NHN high Wilhelminaberg in Landgraaf and the 170.8 m above sea level. NHN high D'n Observant near Maastricht . The village of Vijlen ( 200 m above sea level ) is also located in the Heuvelland.
The natural landscape in the Heuvelland is characterized by forests, moors, fields, meadows and orchards.
Culture
The Heuvelland was accepted as a Nationaal Landschap by the Dutch government in 2005 . Numerous churches, castles, farms and mills are under monument protection. The wayside crosses and chapels, which are located along many streets, are also typical of Limburg.
tourism
Maastricht and Valkenburg are particularly important for tourism . There are numerous hotels, guesthouses, holiday resorts and campsites throughout the region.
