The Sint Pietersberg is a high plateau near the Dutch city of Maastricht . There are huge limestone pits under it . The natural mountain is 107 meters above the Amsterdam level , its man-made peak D'n Observant , named after a nearby former observant monastery , reaches a height of 171 meters. It offers a good view of the city and the Maas and Jeker valleys . The St. Pietersberg is a nature reserve .

Inside the mountain there is a 200-kilometer man-made labyrinth . It was created over the course of 800 years through the mining of sand-lime brick with hand tools to extract building material.

The underground passages and caves also served as a hospital, bunker and hiding place for art treasures and other valuable items during the German occupation (May 1940 to September 14, 1944), including Rembrandt's Die Nachtwache . There are monuments and sculptures on the walls of some corridors .
