Ruwer estuary |
The Ruwer (Latin: Erubris , Rubora ) is a nearly 49 km long, southern and orographically right tributary of the Moselle in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is a second order body of water from the mouth in Trier-Ruwer to the tributary of the Großbach in Niederzerf .
geography
course
The Ruwer rises at an altitude of about 650 m above sea level. NHN on the southern slope of the Rösterkopf in the Osburger Hochwald .
It initially flows south through an uninhabited valley. It then changes its direction to the southwest at Kell am See and then flows through this community. North-northwest of Waldweiler it takes on the Lehbach on its right side . It then happens to Niederkell . The Burkelsbach flows north-west of Mandern on the left . It then flows through a narrow and wooded valley and reaches the Zerfer district of Frommersbach , where it is fed on its left by the Waldbach and shortly afterwards in Zerf on the same side by the Großbach .
From there, the Ruwer meanders in large loops to the northwest, passing Hentern in the process . At Heid Castle it flows to the left of the Klinkbach and at Hinzenburg it is reinforced on the other side by the Rauruwer . It now continues to flow more and more north in great loops. At Schöndorf , the Entergraben joins the Ruwer from the right . It then moves east past Pluwig and Gusterath Valley . At Sommerau it then forms a waterfall . South of Waldrach , its largest tributary, the Riveris , flows to it on its right side .
It now runs in a north-northwest direction, passing Kasel and Mertesdorf and finally flows into the Trier district of Ruwer-Eitelsbach at an altitude of about 123 m above sea level. NHN from the south and right into the Moselle approaching there from the west-southwest .
Its 48.7 km long run ends about 527 meters below its source, so it has a mean bed gradient of about 11 ‰.
Catchment area
The 237.3 km² large catchment area of the Ruwer is located in the western Hunsrück and is drained through it via the Moselle and the Rhine to the North Sea. It encompasses large parts of the Verbandsgemeinde Ruwer , the former Verbandsgemeinde Kell am See and the Trier-Ruwer / Eitelsbach district and has around 28,000 inhabitants.
The catchment area borders
- in the northeast to that of the Fellerbach , which flows into the Moselle
- in the east to that of the Kleine Dhron , which drains over the Dhron into the Moselle
- in the southeast to which the Wadrill that in the prims opens
- in the south to that of the Prims tributary Wahnbach near Waldweiler / Kell am See
- in the southwest of the Losheimer Bach , which also flows into the Prims
- in the west to that of the Saar itself, which flows into the Moselle
- and in the northwest to that of the Oleigenbach , also a tributary of the Moselle.
In the Ruwer catchment area lies the FFH area Ruwer and side valleys with a size of 43.31 km².

Riparian program
In March 1993, the Ruwer and its tributaries were included in the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) 's program for the margins of water that has existed since 1989 . The aim of the project was to develop the water system into a largely natural water and floodplain landscape and to secure it permanently. The project ran until 2004, the cost of the project amounted to around 6.8 million euros and was borne by the BMU, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate , the district of Trier-Saarburg , the municipalities of Kell am See and Ruwer, and the city of Trier .

Numerous rare and protected species live in and around the Ruwer , such as the Mühlkoppe , Dipper , Greater Schiller Butterfly and the Kingfisher . Salmon were still caught in the Ruwer until the 1940s .

The Roman city of Trier ( Augusta Treverorum ) received up to 25,000 cubic meters of water per day via the Roman Ruwer water pipeline .
The Ruwer was mentioned in 371 by the Roman poet Ausonius in the poem Mosella as follows: "The Ruwer turns the grain-grinding stones in dizzy eddies and pulls the screeching saws through smooth marble blocks ."
From 1720 the Ruwer was used to transport timber from the high forest to the Moselle. At this time, numerous alluvial ponds such as the Siebenborn pond south of Mandern were built.
Viticulture
On some steep slopes of the Ruwer is Ruwerwein grown.
