from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Saar-Ruwer-Hunsrück is a low mountain range belonging to the Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located in the area between the Saar and Ruwer rivers .

Geography and geology

The Saar-Ruwer-Hunsrück is a plateau that borders on the Hochwald and Idarwald to the east, and the Lower Saar Valley and the Moselle Valley to the west and north. The terrain slopes down approx. 200 m from the high forest, so that the landscape mediates between this and the valley plains. The edge heights are set off from the actual plateau by a clearly recognizable 30–50 m high step. The plateau is interrupted in particular by the deeply cut Ruwer valley and the Saar breakthrough. In the area of the Saar breakthrough, the plateau is cut by numerous side streams, which are adjusted to the erosion base of the Saar. In the Ruwer area, these cuts are less numerous and shorter. The quartzitic foothills of the Osburger Hochwald reach up to the Saar breakthrough through the Saar-Ruwer-Hunsrück and are partly covered by Vosges sandstone. Most of the area, however, consists of Lower Devonian Hunsrück slate.

The overlying sandy loam soils predominantly carry (mixed) forest stands. The soils also contain loess .

According to the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation , the Saar-Ruwer-Hunsrück covers an area of 318 km².
