The Hoch- und Idarwald is a low mountain range in Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany . In terms of nature, it is part of the Hunsrück , in the southwest of which it is located. It extends from the Ruwertal in the west, where it borders on the Saar-Ruwer-Hunsrück , to the Traunbach in the east, where it borders on the Soonwald . In the north it borders on the Moselhunsrück and in the south on the Saar-Nahe-Bergland . The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park was established in the Hoch- and Idarwald on May 24, 2014 .

Geology and geography

The high and Idar forest is often divided into the two smaller natural units, the high forest and the Idar forest . The high forest includes the Black Forest and the Osburger Hochwald . The highest elevation of the Hoch- and Idarwald is the Erbeskopf (816 m above sea level), which is also the highest elevation of the Hunsrück as a whole. Other significant elevations are Idarkopf , Rösterkopf and Teufelskopf .
