The Idarkopf near Stipshausen in the Hunsrück is 745.7 m above sea level. NHN high mountain of the Idarwald in the districts of Birkenfeld and Bernkastel-Wittlich and is one of the highest mountains in Rhineland-Palatinate .

The Idarkopf is located in the northeast of the Idarwald in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park . Its summit rises around 2 km northwest of the local community of Stipshausen (district of Birkenfeld) and 4 km southeast of the local community of Hochscheid (district of Bernkastel-Wittlich). While the mountain summit and the south-eastern flank of the mountain belong to Stipshausen, western flank parts of the mountain belong to Hochscheid and northern to northeastern parts of the mountain belong to the 3.5 km (as the crow flies ) east-northeast of the summit, Weitersbach (district of Birkenfeld). The Idarbach flows northeast past the Idarkopf .

The Idarkopf belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Hunsrück (No. 24) and in the main unit Hoch- und Idarwald (242) to the subunit Idarwald (242.2).
Protected areas
On the wooded Idarkopf there are parts of the landscape protection area Hochwald-Idarwald with peripheral areas ( CDDA -Nr. 321654; designated 1976; 47.182 km² ) and the Fauna-Flora-Habitat- Area Idarwald (FFH-Nr. 6109-303; 65.64 km² ).
Towers
About 200 m northwest of the summit of the Idarkopf, at 744.2 m height, is the Idarkopf tower , from which the view falls, for example, to the Taunus , the Donnersberg over the Hunsrück , the Eifel and the Westerwald . There is a transmission tower around 300 m northeast of the summit at an altitude of around 738 m .
Winter sports
The Idarkopf was used as a ski area in winter : there were two tow lifts , two ski slopes (one of which was 1,200 m long) and several cross-country trails , a 600 m long toboggan run and an 80 m long toboggan run . In the winter of 2009/10 the lifts were no longer in operation due to major defects. Storm Xynthia caused further severe damage to the facilities in February 2010. The construction of a ski hall at the same location was in the planning stage, but was rejected due to concerns about nature conservation.
Traffic and walking
The federal road 327 leads past Hochscheid, northwest of the Idarkopf . The district road 126, which branches off from this road near the village and runs through the village , which merges into the K 24 at the border of the districts of Bernkastel-Wittlich and Birkenfeld, leads around 2 km (as the crow flies) southwest of the mountain summit over the main ridge of the Idarwald to Stipshausen . For example, starting on this road, the mountain can mostly be hiked on forest paths and paths. The European long-distance hiking trail E3 leads over the main ridge of the Idarwald .
