Location of the local community Stipshausen in the Birkenfeld district | ||
Stipshausen is a municipality in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Birkenfeld . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community . Stipshausen is a state-approved resort .
geography
The place is located on the Kehrbach, southeast of the 746 meter high Idarkopf at the Idarwald in the Hunsrück . 71.1 percent of the district area is forested.
The " Heck settlement " as well as the Stipshausener Mühle, Gerwertsmühle and Lerchenmühle residential areas also belong to Stipshausen.
history
Several barrows in the area show that there was settlement in the past. The most important archaeological finds, however, come from Roman times. A villa rustica stood at today's exit (near the playground) . Not far from there a Jupiter giant rider was found .
In the Middle Ages the village consisted of two settlements: The Stebeshusen , mentioned in 1334, was to the left of the Kehrbach and belonged to the High Court of Rhaunen . On the opposite side was Smer (le) bach , which was mentioned in a document as early as 1325 and, together with the village of Asbach , formed its own in-court. When the Wild and Rhine Counties were divided in 1515, Smerlebach, which was also called Ingericht Stipshausen, fell to the Wild and Rhine Counts of Kyrburg and belonged to the Wildenburg office. Stipshauen remained with the office and high court of Rhaunen. Here the Wild and Rhine Counts of Dhaun were three-quarters and Kurtrier with a quarter of the state rulership. In 1515 15 families lived in the district of Stipshausen.
Smerlebach was pledged to the Schenk von Schmidtburg family from 1619 to 1706 . Later it was owned by the widowed Countess of the Rhine, Louise von Nassau-Saarbrücken (1686–1773) as pledge. When the French reorganized the administration of the territories they occupied in 1798, Stipshausen and Smerlebach were probably united. In 1805 the population was 206, in 1820 already 336 people.
After the transition to Prussia in 1815, Stipshausen belonged to the mayor's office in Rhaunen, district of Bernkastel , district of Trier . Numerous day laborers and craftsmen lived in the village, but especially bricklayers.
With the Rhineland-Palatinate regional reform of 1969/70, Stipshausen became part of the Rhaunen community , Birkenfeld district , and in 2020, the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .
Church life
In 1334 Johann von Basenheim, Burgmann on the Schmidtburg , and his wife Getza donated a chapel in Stipshauen. The Antonius Chapel was initially supplied by a pleban from Rhaunen . In 1504 Archbishop Berthold of Mainz separated the chapel from Rhaunen and elevated it to the parish church with all rights. The right to fill vacancies changed between the Schenk von Schmidtburg families (later Kurtrier) and Metzenhausen .
After the Reformation was introduced in Rhaunen in 1560, the pastor there provided for Stipshausen. But the relationship was never free of conflict. In 1714 the subjects asked the collator, Count Cratz von Scharfenstein , to be looked after by the Hottenbach priest.
In addition to the battle between Rhaunen and Hottenbach for the Stipshausen parish, the denominational dispute put a strain on church life. During the reunification period , the French declared the Antonius Chapel to be a simultaneous church in 1686 . The Catholics, whose proportion of the population had risen to 20 percent due to marriages and immigration, were only allowed to use the church for funerals. A relaxation only occurred when in 1778/79 the Protestant community built its own church in place of the dilapidated Antonius Chapel and provided the Catholics with land and money for their own chapel. The Maternus Chapel was completed in 1781 and replaced by a new building in 1953/54.
In 1819 the Prussian government in Trier ordered the parish union of the Protestant parishes of Hottenbach and Stipshausen. The community is still independent today and is part of the Trier parish. The Catholic Christians, whose share is over 30 percent today, belong to the parish of St. Martin in Rhaunen.
Jewish life
The Wild and Rhine Counts had had so-called Schutzjuden since the Middle Ages . There were larger Jewish communities in Rhaunen, Laufersweiler and Hottenbach in the 18th century . A Jewish resident in Stipshausen is mentioned for the first time in 1709. The children probably attended the Jewish school in Rhaunen.
Around 1800 there were five Jewish families with around 25 men, women and children living in Stipshausen. At the 1808 census there were only 17 people.
In the Prussian era, the Jewish residents of Stipshausen stayed to Hottenbach, where a synagogue was built in 1796 . The Jewish children were also sent to school there. In 1843 there were 32 Jewish residents in Stipshausen. However, the proportion steadily decreased. After the Jewish community in Hottenbach was dissolved in 1932, the 14 Jews in Stipshausen visited the synagogue in Rhaunen. In November 1938 the last Jewish family left Stipshausen.
The Jewish cemetery above the village still reminds of Jewish life in Stipshausen.
