Veitsrodt is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Herrstein-Rhaunen community .

geography

Veitsrodt is in the conservation area Hochwald - Idarwald . The Lindenhof, Strudthof and Ziegelhütte residential areas also belong to the community .

Veitsrodt is a national park community in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document as Rodt at the beginning of the 13th century . Since 1319 it belonged to the wild counts .

For more than 500 years, markets , especially cattle markets, have been held in Veitsrodt , which was also recorded in the town's coat of arms (bull's head and the joining hands, as a contract). The market has been called Veitsrodter Prämienmarkt for 175 years . Every 2nd weekend in July it is held on the market area near Veitsrodt. Every year a wide range of goods is available at over 300 market stalls.

The family of the robber Schinderhannes lived in the village from around 1795 to 1798 . The father Johann Bückler was employed as a field rifle and day laborer. At least for the first time, the Schinderhannes still lived with his parents. Sometimes the Schinderhannes ran errands for the innkeeper Koch from Veitsrodt. On September 16, 1798, Joseph Bückler, the younger brother of Schinderhannes, was confirmed in Veitsrodt. The defining building of the village is the Protestant Baroque church in the center of the village, equipped with an organ made by the famous Stumm family organ builders . Friedrich Christian Laukhard was the pastor here from 1804 to 1811 . During this time he wrote many of his writings. The church also has a bell that is over 500 years old and has been preserved since the world wars.

Municipal council

The municipal council in Veitsrodt consists of twelve council members, who were elected by a majority vote in the local elections on May 26, 2019 , and the directly elected honorary local mayor as chairman.

Bernd Hartmann became mayor of Veitsrodt in 2007. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was confirmed in office for a further five years with a share of 94.12% of the votes.

Culture and sights

The German Gemstone Route leads directly through the village. In 1971 the stone guest book of the German Gemstone Road was created in the nearby forest . It is a hiking trail that is lined with selected boulders from a nearby quarry.

Veitsrodt has two bus stops. While one bus stop can be found right in town, the Veitsrodt Markt stop is just under a kilometer from the town. Lines 346 and 351 stop in Veitsrodt. The final stops are Herrstein / Wickenrodt and Rhaunen / Frankfurt-Hahn Airport .
