history

Veitsrodt is an ancient market town. The market square is north of the village, close to the neighboring town of Herborn , at a central point where roads have met from all sides since ancient times. The mayors of the Wildenburg area of the Wild and Rheingrafen had their seat here. On market days, they had to guarantee the power of the territorial rulers, the maintenance of order and the safeguarding of the various market taxes. The market was originally a cattle and goods market. Most of the livestock were cattle, pigs and sheep from breeders in the area, but horses only rarely. The buyers came from the vicinity around Herrstein , the Idarbann, the Birkenfeld rural communities, the high forest up to the Moselle and sometimes buyers themselves came from France.

The Krammarkt was of great importance for meeting the needs of the peasants with essential things. He was the point of sale for the products of the cottage industry of the nearby towns, including the many clothiers , tanners , screen Weber, Gebildmacher, coopers , Nagelschmiede , Reif rod maker and many other commercial belonged more. These sold a large part of their production here. On March 26, 1838, the Birkenfeld government approved the holding of a total of seven markets in Veitsrodt. The mayor of Veitsrodter was the market director until 1895, who, with three assessors from the town, had to regulate the flow of the market with the distribution of space and demurrage, the farm tents and the cattle housing.

The agricultural associations of the Oldenburg mayor's offices achieved on April 20, 1896 that the main market was set for the period after the grain harvest (August 18) and in future held as a premium market for cattle and pigs. These associations also introduced the sale of lots, the proceeds of which were to be used to buy cattle and agricultural implements. Heifers, cattle, pigs, lambs, poultry as well as agricultural implements and machines attracted the visitors.

With the transformation of the German economy from an agricultural to an industrial society, the importance of markets for supplying the population declined. In the Principality of Birkenfeld , the introduction of electricity in the small villages made it possible to operate small agate and diamond grinding shops, so that agriculture was only a sideline for many. Since 1912, the Veitsrodter premium market has only taken place once a year.
