View of Herrstein

Herrstein on the Deutsche Edelsteinstrasse in Naheland is a municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate and the administrative seat of the Herrstein-Rhaunen community . According to state planning, Herrstein is designated as the basic center.

geography

Herrstein is located in the Hunsrück south of the Idarwald , the Fischbach flows through the village.

The Lindenhof, Steinäckerhof and Walkmühle residential areas also belong to Herrstein .

history

Herrstein Castle (Heresteyn) was first mentioned in a document in 1279. The castle and town belonged to the rear county of Sponheim . The place was then administered from the neighboring Niederwörresbach. With a shift in focus, the importance of Herrstein grew, as it became the seat of a local senior bailiff. In 1428 the town was granted town and market rights, but individual labor services and the obligation of the citizens to maintain the town wall remained. The town charter was lost in 1792 after the occupation by Napoleonic troops, but the function as the administrative seat has continued to this day. Most of the city wall was torn down and the place was able to develop around its core.

A major restoration campaign in the 1970s uncovered the half-timbered houses in the historic town center, which were plastered or clad with slate (partly with asbestos panels). The result was an ensemble of a medieval market town .

The residents of Herrstein are nicknamed Hankel .
