Heinrich II. (Sponheim-Starkenburg)

Count Heinrich II of Sponheim-Starkenburg

Count Heinrich II. Von Sponheim the Younger (* between 1292 and 1295 ; † before October 11, 1323 in Wolfstein ) came from the noble family of Sponheim and ruled the county of Sponheim . However, his exact years of reign are unknown.

Life

Heinrich II. Von Sponheim was the eldest son of Count Johann II. Von Sponheim and his first wife Katharina von Vianden . As a boy he is said to have been an imperial court judge in Italy. In January 1315 he married Loretta von Salm , daughter of Count Johann I von Salm and Jeanne von Joinville (a daughter of Lord Geoffrey de Geneville ). The marriage contract had been signed three years earlier. At the time of marriage, Loretta was about 16 years old and Heinrich almost twice that old. The young couple initially lived in Herrstein , as Heinrich had received Herrstein Castle and its accessories from his father and his second wife Katharina von Ochsenstein for maintenance. The children were probably born in Herrstein Castle. The couple later moved to Alt-Wolfstein Castle on the Lauter . Henry II's uncle, provost Heinrich von Sponheim (in Aachen, Utrecht and Cologne), had received this castle and the surrounding area from Emperor Henry VII as a real estate deposit because of his services in the Italian voyage, and made it available to the couple. They lived in Wolfstein for about four years, after which Count Heinrich II died at the age of 40. He was buried next to his mother Katharina von Vianden in the Himmerod monastery. In his gravestone there is a picture of a young, slim, curly-haired man. In 1323 Count Johann II invited the Saynian and Jülich count relatives, as well as his feudal husband Johann von Braunshorn as well as the friends Eberhard von Randeck and Volker von Starkenburg, for a (family) advice on the succession in the rule. He survived his son for about a year, after which his widow Loretta took over the reign. It is doubtful whether Heinrich II ever exercised a spontaneous co-reign of his father.
