Herrstein Castle

The castle Herrnstein is a partially preserved castle above the valley of Fischbach in the Rhineland-Palatinate community Herrnstein in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

The castle is the oldest building in Herrstein and the origin of urban development. It was founded by Count Heinrich I before 1275 . In 1279, a manor presumably belonging to the castle was also mentioned.

Parts of the castle were expanded into Herrstein Castle from 1742 .

architecture

Stummorgel Herrstein (September 2014)

The castle, which once consisted of the upper and lower castle, originally had four towers, three of which are still preserved today (bell tower, prison tower, also called Schinderhannes tower, and the blunt tower). The most famous among them is the so-called "bell tower". It is the keep and is right next to the castle church. The high mansion, which was destroyed over the centuries, was rebuilt according to old views in the 19th century.

Herrstein Castle is a building with a mansard roof and a large vaulted cellar. It is located on the site of the former lower castle. Since 1772 is located in the Castle Church, a silent - organ . Today the castle chapel is used as a parish church.

Events

Every year in September, in front of the castle, the Schinderhannes robber festival, a medieval market, takes place in the historic town center of Herrstein.
