Randeck Castle

Randeck Castle , also called Randegg , is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the Schlossberg ( 263  m above sea  level ) a little west of the wine-growing town of Mannweiler-Cölln on the Alsenz in the Donnersbergkreis , Rhineland-Palatinate . It was the ancestral seat of the gentlemen von Randeck .

history

The castle was probably built in the 12th century. Heinrich von Randeck (Henricus de Randeke) was first mentioned in a document in 1202. He is probably a grandson of Ulrich von Wartenberg . He was followed in 1231 by his son Gottfried I von Randeck. Gottfried's grandson in 1298, Dietrich von Randeck. Another grandson in 1311, Georg von Randeck. Eberhard von Randeck († 1372), cathedral dean and elected bishop of Speyer , was also descended from here .

The complex was given in 1518 by Emperor Maximilian I as a fiefdom to Johann Brenner von Lewenstein , Burgrave of the Electoral Palatinate and Oberamtmann von Alzey ; 1649 by Emperor Ferdinand III. to the Teutonic Knight Hans Ludwig von Lewenstein . After the Lewensteiners died out, the castle fell to the Electoral Mainz Chancellor Nikolaus Georg Reigersberg in 1668 . In the Palatinate War of Succession , the castle was quickly stormed and blown up by the French in 1690. After that, however, a few buildings were made habitable again. In 1844 it is reported that the castle is privately owned, torn down and the materials recycled.

Today, the castle, the remains of the perimeter wall , a Eckvorwerks which Flankierungstürme and the foundations of the keep exist, held by the Culture Historical Society mannweiler-cölln.
