In Germany, places where large-scale viticulture is practiced and which has a character that shapes the landscape are referred to as wine locations or, rarely, wine-growing locations . Often a not inconsiderable part of the population lives from viticulture, from viticulture and winery needs , from wine sales, from wine gastronomy and from tourism related to wine. Research and teaching related to wine are also very important in some places, such as Geisenheim . Wine locations like to advertise themselves in official websites and brochures with the designation Weinstadt or Weindorf .

In Austria , some places only refer to themselves as wine towns for promotional reasons . Only entire communities are legally designated as wine-growing communities .

The term is already proven by Hippolyt Guarinoni in 1610.
