history
Today's municipality of Oberhambach, then just called Hambach, belonged to the Hinteren Grafschaft Sponheim until the end of the 18th century . The place gave its name to an administrative and judicial district called " care " and subordinated to the Birkenfeld Oberamt . The villages of Hattgenstein and Schwollen also belonged to the care Hambach . In 1607, 24 families lived in the village, in 1699 there were only 6 and in 1772 there were 38. In 1790 there were 142 inhabitants.
In 1794 the left bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops. From 1798 to 1814 Hambach belonged to the canton of Birkenfeld in the Saardepartement . As a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region became part of the Oldenburg Principality of Birkenfeld in 1817 . The community was assigned to the mayor's office Leisel in the Birkenfeld office. From 1918 onwards Hambach belonged to the Oldenburg "Landesteil Birkenfeld" and in 1937 it came to the Prussian district of Birkenfeld . The name change in Oberhambach took place in 1933, when the new community Niederhambach was formed from the neighboring communities of Böschweiler, Burbach and Heupweiler . Oberhambach has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946 .

coat of arms
Blazon : "Under a red-silver shield head in blue a golden rectangle, inside two red-robed figures representing Aesculapia and Mercury ." | |
Justification for the coat of arms: The shield head refers to the former affiliation to the Hinteren Grafschaft Sponheim . The main field shows a simplified illustration of the Roman eight-god stone found near the Hambach Sauerbrunnen, which is now kept in the Birkenfeld local history museum; Aeskulap in particular should refer to the medicinal springs of the Hambach Sauerbrunnen, which have been known for many centuries. |
