history

At the junction to Krummenau there was a Roman villa rustica . The main building with 26 rooms is considered to be one of the largest manors from Roman times in the entire Hunsrück. The remains were uncovered in 1953–1955. The place Weitersbach was first mentioned in the year 1200 as Widemarsbach .

Until the end of the 18th century, Weitersbach belonged to the high court of Rhaunen in the Wild and Rhine County . Most recently, the territory of the Rhaunen High Court was jointly owned by the Kurtrier and the Wild and Rhine Counts.

After the occupation of the Left Bank of the Rhine as a result of the First Coalition War (1794), Weitersbach belonged to the canton of Rhaunen in the Birkenfeld arrondissement of the Saar department from 1798 to 1814 . Due to the resolutions passed at the Congress of Vienna , the canton of Rhaunen and thus Weitersbach became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 . Under the Prussian administration, the community of Weitersbach was assigned to the mayor's office in Rhaunen in the Bernkastel district , which belonged to the Trier administrative district in the Rhine province (1822).

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Weitersbach
Blazon : “In a divided shield above in gold, a red mythical animal with a wolf's head and wide open wings, covered with a black wolf hook . Below in green a silver grain of corn, accompanied by two golden ears. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The mythical animal refers to the former affiliation to the Wild and Rhine Counties and corresponds to the earlier court seal of the Rhaunen High Court. The grain barrel in the lower half was found during the excavations of the Roman villa in the municipality and is now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Trier . The ears of wheat symbolize the agricultural structure of the community.

Economy and Infrastructure

Weitersbacher mill

There is a village community center in Weitersbach. In Idar-Oberstein there is a train station on the Bingen – Saarbrücken line . In the north are the federal highway 50 and the Frankfurt-Hahn airport . Since 1871 there has been a grain mill on the Idarbach that is powered by water. The mill was rebuilt in 1947 after being destroyed in a bombing raid during the war in 1943. The machines date from 1942. The mill has a grinding capacity of one ton per day and is therefore one of Germany's small mills. The operators only process grain from their own cultivation. The miller Daniela Müller-Lorenz is one of the few millers in Germany.
