Location of the local community of Rhaunen in the Birkenfeld district | ||
Rhaunen is a local community in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate and has an administrative office of the Herrstein-Rhaunen community . According to state planning, it is designated as a basic center.
geography
Geographical location
Rhaunen is located in the Idarwald in the Hunsrück in a spacious, water-rich valley basin. This basin separates the Idarwald massif from the Soonwald massif . In the local area of Rhaunen the Lingenbach flows into the Rhaunelbach , this flows into the Idarbach like the Näßbach, the Macherbach and the Büdenbach .
Parish parts
Rhaunen also includes the Neuzenbrunnen settlement and the Hochwälderhof, Königstein and Abendstern residential areas .
geology
The rock, the Hunsrück schist , comes from the geological formation of the Devonian . The basin in which Rhaunen lies was formed by the many streams that flow together here and formed various alluvial fans with a very loamy subsoil. The Hunsrück slate is therefore directly on the slopes, while the loamy soil can be found in the valley meadows. If the slopes are mostly covered with mixed forest, you will find pastureland in the valleys and agriculture on the higher terraces and hilltops. In earlier times the slate was used intensively as a building material, for example as roofing and for building walls. Even the numerous public buildings in Rhaunen, which were built around the turn of the century, have exposed walls made of broken slate stones. None of the numerous slate pits in the valleys around Rhaunen are in operation, and you can still see the spoil heaps here and there. The largest operation was the "Abenstern" mine on Wartenberg in the direction of Hausen. They produced about until the late 1950s. The ridges, such as the Idarwald massif, are formed by the extremely weather-resistant Taunus quartzite , whose soil formation only allows forestry. The Taunus quartzite is home to deposits of lawn iron ores that were exploited and smelted until around the middle of the 19th century, as happened in the “Weitersbacher Hütte” near Rhaunen.
climate
The annual precipitation is 744 mm. The precipitation is in the middle third of the values recorded in Germany. Lower values are registered at 50% of the measuring stations of the German Weather Service . The driest month is April, with the most rainfall in November. In November there is 1.4 times more rainfall than in April. Precipitation varies only minimally and is extremely evenly distributed over the year. Lower seasonal fluctuations are recorded at only 1% of the measuring stations .
history
Rhaunen was first mentioned in a document dated May 20, 841 under the name "Hruna". The married couple Gunthram and Otthruda donated extensive possessions to the Fulda monastery , which was confirmed by the Fulda abbot Hraban in another document of the same date.
Rhaunen was the seat of the high court of the same name . Until the 14th century, the wild counts were the unrestricted owners of the court and the associated towns of Bollenbach , Bruschied , Bundenbach , Gösenroth , Hausen , Heuchelheim, Krummenau , Laufersweiler , Lindenschied , Oberkirn , Stipshausen , Schwerbach , Sulzbach , Weitersbach and Woppenroth . The Schmidtburg was also in the area of the court . With the loss of the Wildgräflichen Schmidtburg to Balduin von Trier , part of the high court came to Kurtrier .
With the end of the Old Kingdom , the medieval administrative unit, the High Court, was finally dissolved. In the course of the French occupation of the territories on the left bank of the Rhine after the Treaty of Lunéville , Rhaunen was added to the Département de la Sarre , Arrondissement Birkenfeld, Canton Rhaunen. As a result of the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna , the area became part of the Kingdom of Prussia in 1815 . Rhaunen became the seat of a mayor's office in the Bernkastel district . Parts of the old high court now belonged to the Oldenburg principality of Birkenfeld (e.g. Bundenbach). Even after the First World War, in the interwar period, and during the National Socialist rule, Rhaunen was the administrative center for the surrounding villages. In the course of an administrative reform in the 1960s, the "Office Rhaunen" was converted into the Association of Rhaunen in the Birkenfeld district.
The former Idarwald barracks is located west of the village on Königstein.
In the course of the creation of a uniform legal system in the German Empire, the Rhaunen district court was set up in 1878, which was housed in a new building on the road to Hausen from 1901. As part of the dissolution of the so-called one-man district courts in Rhineland-Palatinate between 1966 and 1971, the Rhaunen district court was one of the first to close in the state. The last district judge in Rhaunen was Albert Pütz , who had succeeded Walter Beyer in 1964 , who had headed the district court for 21 years.

Natural monuments
The prehistoric menhir , a quartzite block called "Königsstein", erected at the end of the village in the direction of Stipshausen / Idarwald , is not a natural monument in the true sense, but is indicated as such by a slate. Real natural monuments are some very old oaks in the area, as well as the "Jakobstanne" on the Wartenberg, which is actually a mighty Douglas fir.

Public facilities
Rhaunen has an administrative office of the Herrstein-Rhaunen community and is the seat of the "Idarwald" forestry office, whose area of responsibility has increased after the forest management reform . In contrast, the local notary's office, which had been in existence for over 100 years, was relocated to Morbach in 2007 as part of a structural reform . However, there are still consultation hours in Rhaunen. Rhaunen is still the official seat of a Catholic clergyman. Due to a regional reform in the church district of Trier , the Evangelical-Lutheran parish of Rhaunen, which has existed since the Reformation, with the Rhaunen office is dissolved. The parish of Rhaunen merges with the parish of Hausen and will be called the parish of Rhaunen-Hausen in the future. These include the local communities of Rhaunen, Bollenbach, Hausen, Oberkirn and Weitersbach. The (the) responsible clergyman has his seat in the parish of Hottenbach - Stipshausen.
