Hermann Josef Graef

Hermann Josef Gräf SVD (born October 11, 1924 in Rhaunen ; † August 26, 2006 in St. Wendel ) was a German Catholic theologian .

Life

The son of Karl and Anna Gräf attended the St. Paul Mission School in Wengerohr (Wittlich) from Easter 1936 , after which he was moved to the St. Wendel Mission House , which was also closed in 1941. He graduated from high school in Bingen in 1942 . Compulsory military service followed . Until 1944 he served in various hospitals in Germany. In April 1944 he was transferred to a sick bay in Lemberg and then in August to the Eastern Front in southern Poland . At the beginning of 1945 he returned to the west after the onset of the Eastern Front, but in March he was back at the front, this time in the Slovakian Ore Mountains . After the war he was taken prisoner by the Soviets for four years. On May 1, 1949, he began the novitiate in Sankt Augustin . He also completed his first professorship, perpetual vows, studies of philosophy and theology there. Theodor Schu ordained him as a priest on August 28, 1955. He continued his studies in Rome , where he in 1959 at the Gregoriana in Hermann AP Schmidt SJ in liturgical studies doctorate was. In the same year he received the mission statement for the Christ the King Mission Seminary in Quezon City (Philippines), where he taught fundamental theology , dogmatics , patrology and liturgy. In 1964 he did his third degree in Rome and was given the opportunity to study two semesters at the Pontificio Ateneo Sant'Anselmo . During this time he worked in the Liturgy Council (Consilium) at the Vatican under Giacomo Lercaro and Annibale Bugnini . He returned to Tagaytay in the Philippines . For almost 20 years he was consultor of the liturgical commission of the Bishops' Conference of the Philippines.

In 1970/71 he studied for two more semesters at the Liturgical Institute in Trier . In 1983 he came back to Sankt Augustin and taught liturgy at the local theological college (also in the novitiate) until his retirement in 1993. Since 1986 he has published the ordo for the three Steyler communities. In the Philippines he had already made the ordo for all dioceses for 20 years. In addition, he worked for 16 years as a marriage judge in the Archdiocese of Cologne and from 1990 to 2002 he was there, appointed by Cardinal Meisner , the pastor of the Catholic Filipinos. In 1990/91 he helped out for three months each with lectures in liturgy and dogmatics in Pieniezno (Warmia).
