Ordo (liturgy)
An ordo ( Latin for "order", pl. Ordines ) represents a bindingly established process in the liturgy of the Roman Catholic Church . There are ordines for various celebrations of the church, such as the ordo missae for Holy Mass , but also for the administration of other sacraments and sacramentals , such as the Ordo Consecrationis virginum for the consecration of a virgin. The liturgical directory , a calendar of the celebrations of a church year, is also called the Ordo recitandi .
Initially, the ordines were passed down orally, but since the Carolingian era they have been put together in writing to form collections.
