The Ordo missae of the Roman Missal from 1956

In the Ordo missae ( Latin for 'order of the mass'), also known as the ordinance of the mass , the course of the Holy Mass in the Roman rite is laid down with regard to the ceremonies to be performed and the texts to be performed. Ordo Missae is the older and now official name of the Ordinarium Missae . In the authentic edition of the missal for the German-speaking area, the Ordo Missae appears under the heading The celebration of the parish mass . It finds its necessary supplement and explanation through the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani , the General Introduction to the Roman Missal , which will in future be called the Basic Order of the Roman Missal in order to underline its normative significance .

history

In the Roman Missal after the Council of Trent , the regulations for celebrating mass are always contained in several complementary texts. The main ones are:

Both texts do not represent the classical Roman liturgy of late antiquity and the early Middle Ages , but rather go back liturgically to the customs of private mass .

The Roman Missal additional provisions for the Pontifical found in Caeremoniale episcoporum of 1600. In the solemn Mass Bishop traditions of communal celebration of Mass the Church of Rome remained unabbreviated than in the private show.

A general revision of the regulations for the celebration of mass took place in the middle of the 20th century with the under Pope Pius XII. worked out, but only under Pope John XXIII. Codex Rubricarum officially published in 1960 . The Editio typica of the Roman missal from 1962 is based on this. In liturgy , this is therefore included in the Liturgia Piana ("Liturgy of 1962").

The Second Vatican Council decided:

“The Ordo of the Mass is to be revised in such a way that the real meaning of the individual parts and their mutual connection become more clearly apparent and the pious and active participation of the faithful is facilitated. Therefore the rites should be made simpler while faithfully preserving their substance. What has been duplicated or inserted less successfully over the course of time should be omitted. On the other hand, some things that have been lost due to the unfavorable times, should, as far as it seems appropriate or necessary, be restored according to the time-honored norm of the fathers . "

Under Pope Paul VI. In the course of the liturgical reform ordered by this council, renewed versions of both the Ordo Missae and the Ritus Servandus appeared , both of which successively replaced and replaced the corresponding texts of the Missal from 1962, ie the so-called Tridentine Mass .

  1. On January 27, 1965, i.e. still during the council and as a transitional regulation made necessary by its liturgy constitution:
    • Ordo Missae. Rite servandus in celebratione Missae. De defectibus in celebratione Missae occurentibus. Editio typica . Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis 1965.
The reorganization contained therein removed the celebration of the opening and the liturgical service from the altar, allowed, among other things, the use of the vernacular for the first time (until 1967 initially with the exception of the prayer ) and made it generally free for bishops and priests, versus populum , with the face to the people to celebrate.
  2. With the apostolic constitution Missale Romanum of April 3, 1969, Pope Paul VI. the definitive versions of the Ordo missae, renewed in accordance with the ordinances of the Council, and of the rite servandus transformed into the Institutio Generalis Missalis Romani ( General Introduction to the Roman Missal ) come into force. They form the basis for the proper form of Holy Mass in the Roman rite .

A special modification of the renewed Ordo Missae (" Zairean Mass Rite ") was drafted for the dioceses of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly: Zaïre) and approved by the Vatican.

With the Motu proprio Summorum Pontificum , Pope Benedict XVI. In 2007, the liturgy of 1962 was used within certain limits as a usus extraordinarius (special way) of the Roman liturgy and placed the implementation of its new regulation in the hands of the bishops and the papal commission Ecclesia Dei . With the dissolution of this commission by Pope Francis on January 19, 2019, its tasks were transferred directly to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith .

Another approved special form of the Roman Catholic mass celebration contains the missal Divine Worship: The Missal from 2015 for the congregations of the personal ordinariate of the so-called Pastoral Provision ( "anglican use" ).
