Caeremoniale episcoporum

The Caeremoniale episcoporum (“Book of Ceremonies of the Bishops”) also contains normative explanations about the acts of worship of a bishop according to the Roman rite as a supplement to the Pontificale Romanum . It is the only liturgical book that contains only rubrics , i.e. no biblical readings or prayers.

The Caeremoniale episcoporum owes its origin to St. Karl Borromeo and represents an adaptation of the ceremonial books for the Pope and the cardinals , the so-called Caeremoniale Romanum , to the needs of a diocesan bishop . After preparatory work under Popes Gregory XIII. and Sixtus V , Pope Clement VIII published the first official edition in 1600. Various changes were made under his successors. Changed editions appeared in 1650 under Innocent X and 1727 under Benedict XIII. The new edition of 1742 by Benedict XIV. Added a book III, the contents of the papal Church State concerned. Pope Leo XIII. organized a new Editio typica in 1886 , in which Book III was retained despite the collapse of the Papal States .

The edition of Editio typica from 1886, reprinted for the last time in 1948, bears the title:

  • Caeremoniale episcoporum Clementis VIII, Innocentii X et Benedicti XIII iussu editum, Benedicti XIV et Leonis XIII auctoritate recognitum .

Through the liturgical reform of Pope Pius XII. Chapters that have become obsolete have been replaced by:

  • Ritus pontificalis Hebdomadae Sanctae instauratus . Editio typica 1957.

During the general revision of the liturgical books decided by the Second Vatican Council , Pope Paul VI. the relevant new version today:

  • Caeremoniale episcoporum ex decreto Sacrosancti Oecumenici Concilii Vaticani II instauratum, auctoritate Pauli PP. VI promulgatum . Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis MXMLXXV.

The book came to the public in 1975 only with the imprint Bozze di stampa ("printing flags"). Only the (slightly modified) edition of 1984 became legally binding:

  • Caeremoniale episcoporum ex decreto Sacrosancti Oecumenici Concilii Vaticani II instauratum, auctoritate Ioannis Pauli PP. II promulgatum . Editio typica. Typis Polyglottis Vaticanis MXMLXXXIV. (2nd edition 1985; reprint 1995: ISBN 88-209-4217-8 )

The corresponding (slightly modified) liturgical edition for the German-speaking area is called:

Edited on behalf of the Bishops' Conferences of Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as the (arch) bishops of Bozen-Brixen, Liège, Luxembourg and Strasbourg, Solothurn a. a. 1998, 375 pages.
