Divine Worship: The Missal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Divine Worship: The Missal has been the missal for the three Roman Catholic personal ordinariates of Our Lady of Walsingham , Kathedra Petri and Our Lady of the Southern Cross since 2015 . It is based on Anglican liturgical texts and rites from five centuries as well as the current Roman missal . The language is “ Prayer Book English ”, to which a special poetic value is ascribed.

history

Since the 1970s, convertible Anglicans have sought to preserve their particular liturgical tradition in the full communion of the Roman Catholic Church. With the Pastoral Commission in 1980 Pope John Paul II enabled the establishment of personal congregations of Anglican Use , Pope Benedict XVI. With Anglicanorum coetibus 2009 created the basis for the three personnel ordinariats established in the following years.

The missal, a "pastoral variant of the Roman rite", has been developed since 2010 by the papal Anglicanae Traditiones Commission from representatives of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Order of the Sacraments . put into effect.

Quirk

Divine Worship: The Missal and the previously approved ritual Divine Worship - Occasional Services do not establish a separate rite within the Catholic Church, as is the case with the Eastern Catholic Churches . Rather, they take up what is linguistically and spiritually valuable in the Anglican worship tradition, which has developed from the Latin Catholic liturgy, and exclude everything “ Protestant ” in teaching and practice.

The language retains many archaisms that are neither used in the valid English translation of the Roman missal nor in modern Anglican liturgy books, especially the address to God with Thou and Thine . As in the Anglican High Church and in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite , the priest's direction of prayer is "with his back to the people"; there is no “people's altar ”.
