Lev Gennadijewitsch Voronin ( Russian Лев Геннадиевич Воронин , born June 8, 1971 in Astrakhan , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a Russian handball coach and former handball player who was mostly used on the right wing .
Career
The 1.85 m tall and 94 kg heavy left-hander began his professional career in his hometown at Dinamo Astrakhan . With the team from the Caspian Sea , he became Soviet runner-up in 1989. A year later he finally celebrated winning the championship. In 1991 he was again runner-up and reached the semifinals in the IHF Cup in 1991. In the Euro City Cup 1997/98 he failed in the second round. In 1998 he moved to the German 2nd handball Bundesliga for TSG Friesenheim . With TSG he reached the quarter-finals of the DHB Cup 2007/08 , but failed before reaching the Final Four at THW Kiel . After this season and ten years in Germany, he returned to Astrakhan as a player-coach. There he reached the quarter-finals in the EHF Cup 2008/09 again . In the 2009/10 season he was promoted to head coach. From 2010 he coached the Russian club GK Permskie Medwedi , with which he won the trophy in 2014. Since February 2015 he has been training the Russian national team with Dmitri Torgowanow . After the 2015/16 season, Voronin gave up his coaching position at GK Permskie Medvedi and became managing director of the Russian handball association.
Lev Voronin has been a fixture in the successful Russian national team of the 1990s since 1995 . The winger was in the 1996 European European champion in the 1997 World Series champion and the 2000 Olympic Games Olympic champion . In Sydney he was voted the best right winger in the All-Star team. At the 1999 World Cup and the 2000 European Championship, he lost to the big rivals from Sweden in the finals. At his first Olympic Games in 1996 he was fifth and fourth at the 1998 European Championships . In total, Voronin played 114 international matches .
For the Olympic victory he received the award of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (Заслуженный мастер спорта СССР).
