Dmitri Nikolajewitsch Torgovanov ( Russian Дмитрий Николаевич Торгованов , scientific transliteration Dmitrij Nikolaevič Torgovanov ; born January 5, 1972 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR , USSR ) is a former Russian handball player who last played at HSV Hamburg . His playing position in attack was on the circle . Towards the end of his career he was mostly only used in defense. His nickname is "Pino". He received it - still in Wallau's time - from Martin Schwalb and Mike Fuhrig because of his idiosyncratic wooden sequence of movements reminiscent of the wooden doll Pinocchio .
Torgovanov was a member of the Russian men's handball team for many years and has played 219 international matches for Russia, in which he scored 689 goals. With the Russian selection Torgovanov won an Olympic gold medal, two world championships and one European championship . At the handball world championship in 2007 he was again a member of the expanded squad.
After his career Torgowanow took over the coaching of the Russian first division club GK Newa St. Petersburg . From February 2015 to July 2017 he coached the Russian national team with Lev Voronin .
He is 1.99 m long and weighs 106 kg. Torgowanow is married and has one child. The right-hander was a professional handball player.
