history

After Jörg Föste became head of the handball department in 1989, SG Solingen rose in the 1990s, initially as Sportring Höhscheid-Solingen , within a few years from the fifth-rate association league to the handball Bundesliga : Höhscheid was in the 1994/95 season arrived in the then third division and immediately took third place as a newcomer in the southern season of the Regionalliga West. In 1995 the Sportring got three decisive transfers that could ensure the success of the coming seasons. The club hired Bob Hanning as a coach, who had won the A youth championship as a youth coach with TUSEM Essen in 1994, and Hanning brought two of Essen's most talented youth players with him to Solingen: Torsten Jansen and Florian Kehrmann . With this trio they were promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in the following 1995/96 season, and four years later with the relay victory in the 2nd League South, 1999/00 season , promotion to the Bundesliga, meanwhile - since the merger with PSV Solingen in 1998 - under the name SG Solingen.

The 1st men's team had been part of the 1st Bundesliga for two years since the 2000/01 season and, after relegation, played in the 2nd Bundesliga until the 2005/06 season . In view of the geographic location, the club changed squadrons from time to time. While the team played in the 2nd Bundesliga North in 2004/05, they belonged to the southern group in the 2005/06 season.

The SG also distinguished itself through successful youth work. The B-youth 2005 was German youth champion. In 2006 this team became German runner-up as the younger team. On June 23 and 24, 2007, the first A-Youth Final Four for the German championship took place in Solingen. This event was a complete success for SG Solingen, not least because they relegated SC Magdeburg to 2nd place in the final and thus became German A-Youth Champions 2007. The Klingenhalle (2,400 spectators) and the sports hall of the August-Dicke-School were used as training and gaming facilities.

Original club of the Bergisch HC

Since the 2006/07 season, the professional area has been outsourced to the Bergische HC after merging with the professional squad of the neighboring club LTV Wuppertal . The youth and amateur area initially played under the name SG Solingen BHC , but these teams are now also known as Bergischer HC .
