GK Newa Sankt Petersburg ( Russian Гандбольный Клуб Нева Санкт-Петербург ) is a handball club from the Russian city of Saint Petersburg . The association was founded in the 1950s as "Vulkan" (Вулкан). From 1964 he was allowed to participate in the Soviet championship as "Bolshevik" (Большевик). After a demotion to the third division, the club returned in 1973 as "Neva" (Нева) back in the top division. In 1993 they won the first edition of the Russian Super League . 2001 the association was renamed again in "Stepan Razin-Neva" (Степан Разин-Нева). After the main sponsor withdrew, the team had to be relegated from the Super League. With the help of the university he managed to rise again as "University Neva" (Университет-Нева). Since 2009 the club has been called "Sankt-Petersburg Handball Club" (Санкт-Петербургский гандбольный клуб) and was able to establish itself as the second force behind Medvedi Chekhov .
