Pawel Alexejewitsch Sukosjan ( Russian Павел Алексеевич Сукосян ; born January 14, 1962 in Krasnodar , Soviet Union ) is a Russian handball player who plays for the Russian club GK Sungul Sneschinsk.

Player career

The 2.00 m tall and 125 kg heavy handball goalkeeper began his career at the top Soviet-Russian club CSKA Moscow , with which he won the Russian championship in 1994 and 1995. He then played for the German clubs SG Leutershausen and SG Werratal 92 before moving back to Moscow in 1998 for a year. In 1999 he went to the regional league for HSG Kronau / Bad Schönborn , with which he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2000. In 2002 he returned to his homeland and, after stints at GK Newa St. Petersburg and GK Kaustik Volgograd, also played in the Russian league at the age of 50 and in the EHF Europe Cup 2012/13 for GK Sungul Sneschinsk .

National team

Pavel Sukosjan is one of the most successful handball players, although he was overshadowed by Andrei Lavrov throughout his career on the national team . The goalkeeper won the gold medal with the United Team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. He then played at least 145 times for the Russian national team and became world champion in 1993 and 1997 and vice-world champion in 1999 .
At the European Championship in 1996 he was European Champion, in 1994 and 2000 Vice European Champion, in 1998 fourth.
He won his second gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, he was fifth. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he was in the squad, but was not used.
Due to his rare playing times behind Lavrov, he was nicknamed "Bus Driver" by the German players.
