This article describes the

The 2nd European Men's Handball Championship took place from May 24th to June 2nd, 1996 in Spain . The Russian national handball team was able to secure the title, defeating Spain just under 23:22 in the final . The German team took eighth place; Austria and Switzerland could not qualify for the European Championship finals.

Preliminary round
In the preliminary round, the twelve qualified teams played in two groups of six teams each. Within a group, each team competed once against each other team. The two best teams in each group qualified for the semi-finals.
