Vigindas Petkevičius (also known under the name Vygindas Petkevičius ; born November 30, 1970 in Kaunas , Lithuanian SSSR ) is a former German handball player and coach and today's referee from Lithuania .

Career

The middle back player started playing handball in his hometown at Granitas Kaunas in 1973 and became Lithuanian champion in 1990. After a tournament in the Netherlands , Petkevičius left his team while traveling through Berlin and joined the Bundesliga club SC Magdeburg . In the second half of the 1992/93 season he was loaned to second division FSV 1895 Magdeburg . With the SC Magdeburg he was 1996 DHB Cup winner . In 1999 he switched to second division SG Solingen , with whom he was able to celebrate promotion to the Bundesliga in the first year. At the end of the 2001/02 season he was relegated with the club and moved to HSG Düsseldorf for one season , with which he missed his second promotion to the Bundesliga. A year later, however, he achieved another rise with the SG Werratal 92 as regional league champion. Despite the sporting relegation in the following season, the club had to relegate again due to a license withdrawal and dissolved completely. Thereupon Petkevičius was hired as a player- coach by the upper division LiT Handball Nordhemmern / Mindenerwald . Immediately the promotion to the regional league was made and achieved a third place in the 2006/07 season . Then he joined first league relegated HCE Bad Oeynhausen, but left the club a few days before the start of the season to accept an offer as a player-coach for the HSG Katlenburg / Wachenhausen club. However, the team was withdrawn from the game in February 2008 and Petkevičius coached the Swiss club KTV Visp from 2008 to November 2010 . Since then he has not coached a team, but became a handball referee .

Depending on the source, he completed between 20 and 35 junior internationals for the Soviet Union and between 16 and 30 internationals for the Lithuanian national team . After his naturalization on September 3, 1993, Petkevičius played 63 games for the German national team from 1994 to 1996 , scoring 126 goals. He participated in the 1995 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship . He missed the 1996 Olympics due to a thumb injury.
