Igor Butulija ( Serbian - Cyrillic Игор Бутулија , born March 21, 1970 in Belgrade ) is a Serbian handball coach and former handball player who was mostly used as a right back player .

Career

The 1.89 m tall and 88 kg heavy left-hander began playing handball at the age of twelve. At his hometown club RK Red Star Belgrade , he made his debut in 1986 in the Yugoslav league. In 1993 he moved to the Spanish league ASOBAL to BM Atletico Madrid . After one season he went to BM Granollers , with whom he won the EHF Cup in 1995. He then played for Bidasoa Irún , with whom he won the Copa del Rey de Balonmano in 1996 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1997 . After half a year with the Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon , he was signed in January 1998 by the German Bundesliga club TUSEM Essen to replace Alexander Tutschkin . In the summer of 1998 he joined the Montenegrin association RK Lovćen Cetinje . From 2001 he was player- coach at the Austrian club SG Handball West Vienna , with whom he reached the championship finals in 2004.

With the Serbian-Montenegrin national team , Igor Butulija won bronze at the European Championships in 1996 . He finished fourth at the 2000 Olympic Games . In Sydney he scored 24 goals in seven games. Butulija played 147 international matches in which he scored over 400 goals.

From 2008 to 2011 he coached his hometown club Red Star Belgrade. In October 2011 he was suspended for seven months by the Serbian League Association for insulting the referee.
