Daniel Stephan (born August 3, 1973 in Rheinhausen ) is a former German handball player .
In his first years as a youth player, Daniel Stephan was at VfL Rheinhausen. In 1982 he then moved to OSC Rheinhausen . He stayed with the club until 1994. Then he went to TBV Lemgo , where he let his active handball career end in the 2007/2008 season.
Due to his bad luck with injuries, Stephan never played a game in a handball world championship . In 1995 he was in the squad, but was not used. In 1999 he was unable to participate because he was suffering from a fracture of the metacarpal bone. In 2001 his Achilles tendon was injured. In 2003 and 2005 Daniel Stephan was not there either. At the European Championships, however, he was all the more successful. There he took 3rd place in the all-time goalscorer list with 134 goals in a total of 32 games. Because of his never-ending series of injuries, he announced his resignation from the national team in 2005. For winning the silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on March 16, 2005.
After he was active as a player in Lemgo for over 13 years, he was presented on November 14, 2007 as the sports director of TBV Lemgo. His expiring player contract continued to exist, so that he was available to TBV Lemgo as a player on demand until the end of the season. After failing to qualify for the Champions League in 2009 , Daniel Stephan was sacked together with coach Markus Baur in Lemgo.
On May 18th, 2008, his farewell game took place in the Lipperlandhalle in Lemgo. After Volker Zerbe, he is only the second Lemgoer to receive this honor. In this game, the selection "Daniels Champions" competed against the "TBV Allstars".
From July 1, 2010, Daniel Stephan worked as sports director for the second division club HSG Düsseldorf , with which he had signed a three-year contract. However, in March 2011 he asked for the contract to be terminated at the end of the season. The association complied with this request.
In 1998 Daniel Stephan was the first German handball player to be elected world handball player . He had his finest hour in the seven-meter throw of the 2004 Olympic quarter-finals against Spain when he scored at 32:30.
