Gheorghe Gruia Marinescu (born October 2, 1940 in Bucharest , † December 9, 2015 in Mexico City ) was a Romanian handball player who became world champion with the national team in 1964 and 1970 and won the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympic Games .

Life

Gheorghe Gruia triumphed with the Romanian national team at the 1964 and 1970 World Cup . In 1967 the back space right won third place at the World Cup. At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, the left-hander won the bronze medal and was top scorer with 37 goals. In total, Gruia played 126 international matches in which he scored 636 goals.

Gruia was active in the Romanian army club Steaua Bucharest , with which he won the Romanian championship and the 1968 European Cup . He developed jaundice in the 1960s . In 1978 he moved to Mexico City. He came at the invitation of the president's brother, worked there as a handball coach and made the sport known in Mexico.

In 1992 he was named the best player of all time by the International Handball Federation .

Gheorghe Gruia died on December 9, 2015 at the age of 75 in Mexico.
