Ivano Balić (born April 1, 1979 in Split , SR Croatia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian handball player . The central backcourt player was elected world handball player in 2003 and 2006 . Journalists dubbed him either “ Ronaldinho des handball” or “Mozart des handball”, was known for his concealed forearm throws and passes without eye contact, was the only national player to date to be voted MVP at a major handball event five times in a row and is widely accepted as one of the best players in handball history.
Career
Ivano Balić began his sporting career with basketball ; For many years he trained at Jugoplastika Split . However, he decided to play handball and began his career at the RK Split club . His second station was from 2001 RK Metković , then the second strongest club in the Croatian handball league. In the 2001/02 season he won the Croatian Cup and the championship, but this was subsequently awarded to the RK Zagreb . From Metković he moved to the Spanish club Portland San Antonio in 2004 . With the men from Pamplona he won the Spanish championship in 2005 and was in the final of the EHF Champions League in 2006 . In 2008 he returned to Croatia, where he joined series champion RK Zagreb. With the team he won the Croatian championship and the cup four times from 2009 to 2012. His contract with RK Zagreb expired at the end of June 2012.
Shortly before the start of the 2012/13 season, he joined Atlético Madrid , with whom he won the Super Globe and the Spanish King's Cup in 2012 . After Atlético Madrid filed for bankruptcy in the summer of 2013, Balić moved to the German Bundesliga club HSG Wetzlar in August 2013 . His contract was extended for one year to June 2015 in May 2014. He ended his career after the 2014/15 season.
Since July 1st, 2015 he has been working for the Croatian handball association as coordinator for Croatian men's handball.
National team
Balić was the head of the team in attack as the leading player. From 2003 to 2012 he reached at least the semifinals with the Croatian national team in ten international championships. He was not called up for the 2013 World Cup. By August 12, 2012 Balić played 198 international matches in which he scored 535 goals.
