Sławomir Szmal (born October 2, 1978 in Strzelce Opolskie , Poland ) is a former Polish handball goalkeeper who last played for the Polish first division club Vive Targi Kielce . He was also the goalkeeper of the Polish national handball team . In 287 international appearances for Poland, he scored three goals. He ended his career after the 2017/18 season.
Szmal is married to Aneta, who also played handball and was in goal at SG Kronau / Östringen.

Others

Szmal has German grandparents who come from the Opole region. His uncle Andreas Mientus , who played for TV Hüttenberg , was also a Polish national goalkeeper.

His nickname is "Sławek". The nickname "Kasa" is Polish and colloquially means money , which in turn is related to Szmal , another colloquial term for money.

On February 2, 2007 he was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland .

On May 26, 2010, he was selected by the IHF as World Handball Player of the 2009 season.
