The 9th men's handball European championship took place from January 19 to 31, 2010 in Austria .
Host
The Congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF) awarded the event during its meeting on May 5, 2006 in Vilamoura . The candidacy of the Austrian Handball Federation prevailed in the final vote with 28:18 votes against Greece's application . Previously, the candidacies from Germany , Iceland , Croatia , Macedonia and Hungary had failed.

The group draw for the tournament took place on June 24, 2009 in Vienna. Croatia, Denmark, Germany and France were set as group heads.
Squad of the participating teams
In order to participate in the European Championship, the qualified associations had to name their 28 players by December 15, 2009. Of these 28 players, the national associations had to name a maximum of 16 players at least one day before the start of the tournament. After the preliminary round, a maximum of two players from the 16 selected were allowed to be replaced by players from the group of 28 named players. After the main round, another player may be replaced.
