Oscar Carlén (born May 11, 1988 in Karlstad ) is a former Swedish handball player . He is 1.94 m tall.
Career
Oscar Carlén came to handball through his father, the former handball world champion Per Carlén , and started in the youth department of Ystads IF HF , his father's last club. In 2005 he made his debut for Ystad in the Swedish first division. His national breakthrough came in the 2006/07 season: Carlén threw 137 goals in 25 games and was voted Swedish Player of the Year. In the 2007/08 season, the backcourt player was the top scorer in the Elitserien with 208 goals . For the 2008/09 season he signed a three-year contract with SG Flensburg-Handewitt . From the 2011/12 season Carlén was under contract with HSV Hamburg .
Due to a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear in February 2011, he was out for the rest of the season. During an advanced training session at the end of September 2011, his right cruciate ligament tore again (more correctly: the cruciate ligament surgery). This made a double operation necessary. First of all, the implants in the drill channels in the bone were removed and a new cruciate ligament was inserted after about four months. Due to this injury, Carlén did not play a Bundesliga game for HSV Hamburg. In early September 2013 it was announced that he was leaving the club, returning to his home country and ending his career due to the injury.
Oscar Carlén made 78 appearances for the Swedish national team . With Sweden he took part in the 2008 European handball championship in Norway and the 2009 handball world championship in Croatia.
In July 2017, Carlén took over the position of assistant coach at Ystads IF. In summer 2020 he was promoted to head coach at Ystads IF.
