The handball division is particularly successful. She is a member of the North German Handball Association . It is known not only for the men's handball team, which has played in the 1st handball league since the 2009/10 season , but also for the male and female youth teams. Home is the Lower Saxon town of Burgdorf near Hanover .
history
In 1922, the Burgdorf Free Gymnastics Association was founded with a first handball department. In 1928 she separated from the swimming department in a dispute and joined the Viktoria club from 1907 . The first men's handball team was gaumeister several times, the last time in 1932. A year later, the Free Gymnastics Association was dissolved by the National Socialists. The members were divided between the two Burgdorf clubs Viktoria from 1907 and MTV from 1849 , which merged in 1938 to form the gymnastics and sports community of 1849 Burgdorf . After the Second World War , the handball team was one of the leading in northern Germany.
Today's Gymnastics and Sports Association Burgdorf was founded on January 13, 1946 . In 1948 Burgdorf became district champion, and immediately after promotion to the regional league (Heide season) they became regional champion in 1949. However, one had to forego promotion to the Lower Saxony League for financial reasons. In 1951, due to a lack of membership, gaming operations had to be severely restricted, TSV Burgdorf only played at district level. Its own sports hall was only inaugurated in 1971. From 1978 to 1981 there was a syndicate with Empelde in the youth sector to enable the A-Juniors to play in the district and major leagues. 1986 he was promoted to the district league, a year later to the district class; before that one played in the city league and below.
After that it went steadily uphill. This was followed by further promotions in the regional league in 1990, in the association league in 1994 and in 1997 in the Regionalliga Nord , in which they were runner-up in 2003. In 2005 he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga North , which was only exceeded by the renewed promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2008/09 season . Since the 2009/10 season , Burgdorf has played in the top German league.
On February 19, 2011, the relegation-threatened club split with its Icelandic coach Aron Kristjánsson with immediate effect , and sporting director Stefan Wyss was also dismissed. Kristjánsson's successor was Christopher Nordmeyer , who had been a player for the Burgdorf team for 20 years. At his own request, he ended his coaching activity at the end of the 2014/15 season. He will be followed by Jens Bürkle at the beginning of the 2015/16 season . After a series of 16 games without a win, Bürkle, who actually had a contract until 2019, was on leave at the end of the 2016/17 season. Antonio Carlos Ortega has coached the team ever since .
