Kai Häfner (born July 10, 1989 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ) is a German handball player .

Career

society

The 1.88 m tall backcourt player , who used to play on the right wing and before his time in Göppingen also on the backcourt middle position, began playing handball at TSB Schwäbisch Gmünd . In the 2006/07 season he played in the 2nd handball Bundesliga with TV Bittenfeld and then with Bundesliga club Frisch Auf Göppingen , with whom he won the EHF Cup in 2011 . After his contract in Göppingen expired in 2011, the left-hander switched to league rivals HBW Balingen-Weilstetten . From the 2014/15 season he played at TSV Hannover-Burgdorf , where he initially signed a two-year contract. In summer 2019 he moved to Bundesliga club MT Melsungen .

National team

Häfner won the silver medal at the European Championship with the German junior national team in 2008 . A year later he won gold at the Junior World Championship . On April 15, 2010, he made his debut in the men's national team against Denmark .

At the 2016 European Championships in Poland, he was nominated for the last game of the main round (against Russia ) after an injury to Steffen Weinhold . The team won the title against Spain on January 31, 2016, to which he contributed with a total of 15 goals in three games. Among them was the winning goal in the last few seconds of the game in a 34:33 victory in the semifinals against Norway.

At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the bronze medal with the German team. For this he was honored with the silver laurel leaf by the Federal President on November 1, 2016 . For the European Championship 2018 he was appointed by national coach Christian Prokop in the 20-man squad, who denies the preparation. On January 7th, he was appointed to the final squad and took part in the 2018 European Championship . Including this tournament, he has played 80 games and scored 172 goals.
