Rakometniot Klub Vardar (РК Вардар) is a handball club from the north Macedonian city of Skopje . The club is the country's most successful in men's handball and, alongside RK Pelister Bitola and local rival RK Metalurg Skopje, one of the three top clubs. Since the 2011/12 season, Vardar has been participating in the newly founded SEHA league and only joins the domestic league in the play-off phase.
history
RK Vardar was founded in 1961 as the handball department of the parent club, which has existed since 1947. After a few seasons in the top Yugoslav division, the club gained importance after Macedonia's independence. Vardar is the country's record champions with nine titles. Internationally, the club reached the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup three times . In the EHF Champions League 2013/14 , Vardar eliminated the defending champion HSV Hamburg in the round of 16 , but then failed in the quarter-finals due to the away goals rule at SG Flensburg-Handewitt . In the EHF Champions League 2014/15 Vardar failed again in the quarterfinals, this time at the top Polish club KS Vive Targi Kielce . In the 2016/17 season, Vardar sensationally won the Champions League in the final against Paris Saint-Germain . A year later they reached the Final Four again , in which they finished fourth after two narrow defeats. In the 2018/19 season they won the Champions League again, this time in the final against the favorite KC Veszprém from Hungary. The Russian oligarch Sergej Samsonenko had previously announced his withdrawal from the club and the handball department due to political pressure over the dispute over the name of Macedonia . After the final, however, he announced that he would continue to invest in the club. Since a large part of the top players had already signed contracts with other clubs after his announced resignation, a change is imminent for Vardar Skopje in the coming years.
