Joseph Kaffsack
Joseph Kaffsack (born October 21, 1850 in Regensburg , † September 7, 1890 in Berlin ) was a German sculptor .
Life
Joseph Kaffsack was the son of a printer. He attended the Latin and trade schools in Regensburg. He soon gave up his desire to become a watchmaker. Instead, following his inclination, he came to sculpture through the arts and crafts . In 1874 he carried out restoration work in the Marienkirche in Lübeck . In the same year a scholarship enabled him to study at the Dresden Art Academy . He received his training as a sculptor here from Ernst Hähnel (1811-1891).
After graduating, he went to Berlin in 1880. It was here that his first major work was created, a three-meter-high statue "Lubecca", which was a plaster model of the city of Lübeck. A bronze casting of it and an installation in public space were denied to him. However, this work opened the way to further assignments.
Over the next few years he created a number of decorative works for private and public buildings, especially for Leipzig institutions. One of Kaffsack's most famous works is the monument to Wilhelm I and Friedrich III, unveiled on October 18, 1890 . at the Giebichenstein in Halle . He used the grown rock as a base and background for the colossal figure of the Archangel Michael made of white marble , who places his sword on the slain dragon and holds a palm branch over the bronze shield decorated with relief images of the two emperors . In addition to six large figures on the former main post office , he created the group “Fame and Truth Erringt der Seeker” in Leipzig for the university library, which has been a cast crowning the building since 2009 and has been placed in its courtyard as a damaged original.
Joseph Kaffsack drowned, almost 40 years old, on a boat trip on the Berlin Wannsee .
