The RK Celje is a Slovenian handball club from the city of Celje, founded in 1946 . RK Celje plays in the 1st Slovenian league . In 2019, the men's team won the Slovenian championship for the 24th time in the club's history. The home ground is the Zlatorog Hall.

Atmosphere in the hall

In the years after Slovenia's independence, the club developed into the strongest club in the country and subsequently one of the top addresses in European handball . The Slovenian championship title has been celebrated seventeen times since 1992. For the first time internationally they played in the 1993/94 season. There the club reached the group stage and was the last to drop out of the group. A year later they were eliminated in the round of 16 against KC Veszprém . For the 1995/96 season they were eliminated in the quarterfinals against RK Zagreb . In the years 1997 to 2001 you always reached the semi-finals in the Champions League and failed every time. Three times they had to admit defeat to FC Barcelona . In the 2001/02 season they failed in the quarter-finals at the eventual winner, SC Magdeburg . A season later they took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup, where they lost to BM Ciudad Real in the semifinals . The 2003/04 season is the club's most successful international season. The Champions League final was won against SG Flensburg-Handewitt from Germany. And for the first time they took part in the EHF Champions Trophy , which they won in the final against THW Kiel with 30:29. In the following season they failed again at FC Barcelona in the semifinals. In the 05/06 season they reached the quarter-finals and then failed at the Spanish club BM Ciudad Real. A season later they lost in the round of 16. They also held the Champions Trophy in Celje, but had to let THW Kiel go in the final. In 2008 and 2009 they were eliminated in the group stage. In the 2009/10 season they played in the EHF Cup after failing in the Champions League qualification to Ademar León and Kadetten Schaffhausen . The end in the group phase came in the 2010/11 season, when they played in a "hammer group" with THW Kiel, FC Barcelona , Chambéry Savoie HB , Rhein-Neckar Löwen and Vive Targi Kielce . In the EHF Champions League 2013/14 they reached the last sixteen, where they lost to SG Flensburg-Handewitt.

The association also competes under the name of its sponsor Pivovarna Laško (a Slovenian brewery).
