Siarhei Rutenka in a Champions League game against VfL Gummersbach

Siarhei Rutenka started playing handball in his hometown near Arkatron Minsk. He moved to RK Velenje in the Slovenian league early on and played his first league games there. In 2001 he joined the Slovenian series champion RK Celje , with whom he won the Slovenian championship in 2000/01, 2001/02, 2002/03, 2003/04 and 2004/05, the Slovenian championship in 2001/02, 2002/03 and 2003/04 Cup, won the EHF Champions League in 2003/04 and the EHF Club European Championship in 2004.

With these recommendations and an average of approx. 7 goals / game, he moved to BM Ciudad Real in the Spanish ASOBAL league in 2005 . Here he won the Spanish championship in 2006/07, 2007/08 and 2008/09, the Copa ASOBAL in 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08, the EHF Champions League in 2005/06, 2007/08 and 2008/09 and in 2005 / 06 and 2006/07 the EHF-Club-EM. In the 2006/07 season, Rutenka was always plagued by injuries, so that BM Ciudad Real temporarily planned to sign another player in his position. In the summer of 2009 he finally left Ciudad Real and then played for league rivals FC Barcelona. With Barcelona he won the championship in 2010/11, 2011/12, 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2014/15, as well as the EHF Champions League in 2010/11 and 2014/15 . Like José Javier Hombrados , Michail Iwanowitsch Jakimowitsch and Mateo Garralda , he won the EHF Champions League with three different clubs. In 2013/14 he won the Super Globe , the Supercopa Asobal , the Copa ASOBAL and the Copa del Rey de Balonmano . In the EHF Champions League 2013/14 he reached the Final Four . He left Barcelona at the end of September 2015. He then joined the Qatari club Lekhwiya . But he left this again after only two months and was then without a club. From February 2016 until the end of the 2015/16 season he was under contract with the Belarusian first division club SKA Minsk . In December 2016, Rutenka trained again with the Qatari club Al Quiada, but no contract was concluded. In January 2017, Rutenka announced the end of his career.

National team

Siarhei Rutenka had already played a number of international matches for the Belarusian national team . In 2004 he took on Slovenian citizenship and played 56 international matches for the Slovenian national team . He took part in the 2004 Olympics and the 2005 World Cup, where he was the fourth top scorer. At the 2006 European Championships he was the top scorer, while his team only finished 8th. Although Rutenka sustained a torn muscle fiber in his left thigh at the 2006/07 European Championship in Cologne, the doctors got him back into shape by the 2007 World Handball Championship in Germany . However, he dived completely and only took a disappointing 10th place with Slovenia.

In January 2008, Rutenka received Spanish citizenship. For this reason, Rutenka recently stayed away from the Slovenian national team and did not take part in the 2008 European handball championship in Norway.

Since October 2010, he has held Belarusian citizenship again. With Belarus he took part in the 2013 World Cup and the 2014 European Championship .

His younger brother Dzjanis (* 1986) was also a Belarusian national handball player.
