The Northwest Tunnel ( Russian Северо-западный тоннель / Severo-sapadny tonnel ) is a 3.25 kilometer long traffic tunnel in the Russian capital Moscow . It was put into operation in January 2008.

The tunnel is located north of the Krylatskoje district and runs under a forest area. It has a total of two levels with two tubes each. The higher level is intended for car traffic on the newly constructed motorway route (which also includes the Schiwopisny Bridge over the Moscow River , a few hundred meters east of the tunnel ), while underground trains run on the lower level . The section of the underground tunnel within the Northwest Tunnel is part of a new section of the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line that went into operation on January 7, 2008. Another tube with a diameter of six meters is provided between the tunnel tubes for technical purposes and for possible escape routes. The main tubes are each 3250 meters long including the ramps and have a diameter of 13.75 meters each.
