The 23 Handball World Cup Men ( Spanish : Campeonato Mundial de Balonmano Masculino de 2013 ) was from 11 to 27 January 2013 in Spain held. The host's team, the Spanish team , won the championship in the final against the Danish team 35:19.

On October 2, 2010, the Council of the International Handball Federation (IHF) selected Spain as the host in Herzogenaurach . The Royal Spanish Handball Federation was the only candidate after the associations from Denmark , South Korea and most recently Norway withdrew their candidacy. Denmark withdrew the application after the country won the bid for the 2014 European Handball Championship on September 25, 2010 . On December 7, 2010, Hassan Moustafa signed the contract for the IHF and Juan de Dios Román Seco for the Spanish association to host the 2013 World Cup.

Group draw

The draw for the preliminary round groups of the 2013 Handball World Cup took place on July 19, 2012 in the Jardines del Buen Retiro in Madrid. The 24 qualified teams were divided into four groups of six teams each. This results in the following groups:

Group A (Granollers) Group B (Seville) Group C (Saragossa) Group D (Madrid)

game schedule

The preliminary round began on January 11, 2013 with the opening match between Spain and Algeria in Madrid. For the remaining 22 teams, the tournament began one day later. The preliminary round was played in four groups of six teams; the individual groups played in Madrid, Barcelona / Granollers, Seville and Saragossa. The preliminary round ended on January 19, 2013.

The teams that finished 1st to 4th in their group after the preliminary round qualified for the final round. The teams in places 5 and 6 played on January 21 and 22, 2013 in the President's Cup .

In the final round, the matches of the round of 16 took place on January 20 and 21, 2013 in Barcelona and Saragossa. The quarter-finals took place on January 23rd, the semi-finals on January 25th. The game for 3rd place and the final took place on January 26th and 27th, 2013.

Preliminary round

Evaluation criteria

If two or more teams are tied, the following criteria will decide on the placement after the preliminary round:

  1. higher number of points in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
  2. better goal difference in direct encounters between teams with the same points;
  3. higher number of goals in direct encounters between teams with equal points;
  4. better goal difference from all group games;
  5. higher number of goals from all group matches;
  6. the lot.
