The Caja Mágica ( German  magic box ) is a 17 hectare sports complex with a focus on tennis , located in the Spanish capital Madrid , on the banks of the Manzanares . It is currently the venue for the Madrid Masters , a men's ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament, and the WTA Madrid , a premier mandatory women's tournament that is being held simultaneously.

The 17th MTV Europe Music Awards were presented here on November 7, 2010 .

In the 2010/11 season, the Real Madrid basketball team played their league and Euroleague games in the great hall. In the 2011/12 season it only served as a venue for the Euroleague games.

In January 2013, the Caja Mágica was one of the venues for the men's handball world championship .

construction

The main building of the facility is the Edificio Madrid Caja Mágica , a sports hall that houses three stadiums. The Center Court , with a capacity for 12,442 spectators, is named Estadio Manuel Santana . The second largest square is called Estadio Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and has 3,194 seats. A third stadium is also available for 2,730 spectators. All courts have a movable roof that can be closed if necessary.

Also part of the complex is Tennis Indoor , an elongated building with 11 tennis courts, and Tennis Garden , an open-air facility with 16 courts.

Geographical location and transport links

The Caja Mágica is located in the south of Madrid, in the San Fermín district of the Usera district . The complex is part of the Parque Lineal del Manzanares riverside park . The sports facility can be reached by metro line 3 ( San Fermín-Orcasur station ) as well as by bus lines 23, 78, 123 and T32. For events in the Caja Mágica, another bus line with number 180 will be set up, which connects the hall with the Legazpi station.
