Ulrik Wilbek (born April 13, 1958 in Tunis , Tunisia ) is a handball coach from Denmark . From 2005 to 2014 he coached the Danish men's national handball team .

From 1985 to 1988 he coached the men of Virum-Sorgenfri HK , then the women of Viborg HK , with whom he was Danish runner-up in 1991.

Wilbek had his first successes as a national team coach with the Danish women's junior team in the 1980s. From 1991 he also coached the Danish national women's handball team , which he led to the final of the 1993 World Cup . Under his leadership, the women's national team became European champions in 1994 and third at the 1995 World Cup . The team won the European Championship in 1996 , the Olympics in 1996 and the World Championship in 1997 . He then ended his engagement as a coach of the women's national team.

Wilbek took over the training of the women's team from Viborg HK again and won the Danish championship for four years in a row; In 2001 he led the team to the final of the EHF Champions League . He then became the men's coach of Viborg HK.

Since 2005 he has coached the Danish men's national handball team . His successes include winning the European Championship in 2008 and the European Championship in 2012 . Further successes were the runner-up title at the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 World Cup , as well as third places at the 2006 European Championship and the 2007 World Cup . After finishing second at the 2014 European Championship , Wilbek resigned from his position as national coach. He then became sports director at the Danish Handball Federation (DHF). He ended this position in August 2016.

From 1997 to 2005 he was a member of the Venstre party in the city parliament of Viborg; he withdrew his candidacy for mayor of Viborg in favor of his coaching activity.

In addition to his work at DHF, Wilbek has been a consultant at the Danish football club Brøndby IF since 2014 .

Ulrik Wilbek is married to the former handball player Susanne Munk Wilbek .

Wilbek was elected Mayor of Viborg in November 2017 .
