Luka Žvižej (born December 9, 1980 in Celje , SR Slovenia , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Slovenian handball player . He is 1.87 m tall.
Žvižej, who played in Germany for GWD Minden and ran up for the Slovenian national team, was mostly used on the left wing .
Luka Žvižej started playing handball in his hometown. He also made his debut in the Slovenian first division for the local first division club RK Celje and won the championship and cup double in 1999. After he was loaned to league competitor RK Trimo Trebnje for the 1999/2000 season , he also won the double in 2001 and the championship in 2003 with the men from the Slovenian Styria . 2003 Žvižej was committed by the CB Cantabria Santander from the Spanish league ASOBAL , where he only stayed one year; In 2004 he moved on to the big FC Barcelona . With the Catalans he won the EHF Champions League in 2005 and the Spanish championship in 2006. In the same year, Žvižej was sorted out at FC Barcelona and returned to his former club from Santander. Sporty he descended with the Cantabrians; However, due to the forced relegation of BM Alteas , his club could remain in the top Spanish league. Nevertheless, Žvižej signed a contract with the then Hungarian champions SC Szeged in 2007 . In summer 2010 he returned to RK Celje. There he won the Slovenian championship in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and the Slovenian Cup in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. In the summer of 2017 he joined RK Maribor . In September 2017 he moved to the German Bundesliga club GWD Minden , where he ended his active career in summer 2019.
Luka Žvižej has played 217 caps for the Slovenian national team. At the 2004 European Championships in his own country, he became vice European champion. In the same year he took part in the Olympic Games in Athens and finished 11th. With Slovenia he took part in the 2007 World Cup in Germany, but only finished 10th; at the European Championships in Norway in 2008 , he retired with his country after the main round. In 2010 he reached the 11th place at the European Championships , in 2012 the 6th place. He finished fourth at the 2013 World Cup .
His brother Miha Žvižej (* 1987) also plays handball.
